History of the Yellowstone Club
The Yellowstone Club was founded by Tim and Edra Blixseth in 1997. Tim Blixseth had a background in real estate development and had previously developed several luxury properties in California and Hawaii. He had also been a member of a similar private ski resort in California and wanted to create a similar experience in Montana.
The Blixseths purchased the land for the Yellowstone Club from a lumber company and began developing the resort, which included ski slopes, golf courses, and luxury homes. They marketed the club as an exclusive destination for wealthy individuals who valued privacy and seclusion.
The Yellowstone Club quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exclusive and luxurious private clubs in the world, attracting high-profile members and celebrities. However, in 2008, the club filed for bankruptcy after the Blixseths became embroiled in a legal dispute and the global financial crisis hit. The club was eventually purchased by Sam Byrne, a private equity investor, in 2009, and has since regained its status as a premier luxury resort. His firm CrossHarbor Capital acquired it for approximately $115 million which outbid Credit Suisse.
In a little bit of more recent controversy, the Yellowstone Club was fined by Montana DEQ for a wastewater spill into the Gallatin River. Penalties amounted to more than $90,000 for spilling 30 million gallons of treated wastewater in March 2016.
